Coffee School - Cooperatives

A coffee cooperative is a group of small-scale farmers numbering anywhere from 50 to 5000. Cooperatives are formed to empower farmers and provide essential services. Cooperative can provide: bargaining power, processing machinery, education, banking services, diverse markets, certifications and a variety of other resources.

They are usually region specific, such as the Meru and Kirinyaga cooperatives in Kenya, which AGRODEV works directly with. Cooperatives have an elected board that governs the activities they engage in. Some cooperatives are very successful in marketing their coffee while others have extreme difficulty even performing the most basic tasks. General meetings are held regularly. These can provide farmers with new information pertinent to their coffee production as well as a social gathering place to informally discuss pressing topics.
