Coffee School - Estates

Plantations or estates as they are more commonly referred, vary in size from small estates numbering only a few acres to ones as large as thousands of acres. Estate owners control the majority of available processing facilities and often manage the export process, which enables them to reap more of the profits in the coffee chain. Many coffee estates are highly mechanized and rely on regular application of agrochemicals. Millions of people are employed as workers on estates, many of whom are migrant. In the estate sector, low wages, poor working conditions, and lack of housing, education, nutrition and healthcare prevail.

AGRO Café buys only from small estates who meet the strict standards of FLO. This ensures growing conditions are not environmentally harmful and labourers are paid a decent wage, which can be up to 200% more than what the average current pay is.
